| On a glorious sunny Bank Holiday
Tuesday 4 June, Guiseley won the 17th annual Eddie Nelson
Aire-Wharfe 6-a-side competition at Ilkley Cricket Club. |
|
| 10 teams entered the competition and were split into two
groups of 5 playing in a round robin format with the top two
in each going through to the semi-finals. Group 1 comprised
Burley, Guiseley, Hall Park, Horsforth & Ilkley and Group
2 Calverley, Green Lane, Illingworth, Otley & Rawdon. The
format is that each side faced 5 overs, one from each player
except the wicket-keeper. |
|
| The day started dramatically with Guiseley and Ilkley each
scoring 43 but Ilkley winning as they conceded less wickets.
Guiseley and Burley then scored 35 each with Guiseley this
time winning on the least wickets rule. These proved to be the
crucial games in Group 1 as all three sides beat Hall Park
& Horsforth. Ikley also beat Burley and went through to
the semi-finals as unbeaten group winners, Guiseley as
runners-up. |
|
| Group 2 proved to be very competitive with all sides beating
each other at some point during the day, Green Lane eventually
going through as group winners and Otley as runners-up. |
|
| Both semi-finals proved to be somewhat one-sided affairs
with Otley scoring 23 all out against Ilkley who knocked off
the runs easily for the loss of 1 wicket. In the second
semi-final Guiseley played near neighbours Green Lane and
batting first scored 55 for 3, the highest total of the day
with Adam Waite scoring 17 and Robert Butterfield 18 not out.
Tight bowling then ensured that Green Lane were restricted to
30 for 3. |
|
| Consequently the day finished as it had started with Ilkley
playing Guiseley but this time in the final. Guiseley were
invited to bat first and scored an excellent 46 for 2 with
Robert Butterfield again leading the way with an excellent 25
not out. The score looked eminently gettable but a consistent
all-round performance from the Guiseley bowlers ensured that
when it came to the last over although no wickets had been
taken the Ilkley openers needed 17 to win. The talented and
dangerous Alex Bailey, due in at No3, could only sit and watch
as leg-spinner Callum Fraser restricted them to 1 from the
final over and the Ilkley reply finished 16 short at 31 for
0. |
|
| A day which started at 11:00am finished at 7:45pm and
Guiseley had won the trophy for the 5th time with a team all
aged U12 that, worryingly for everyone else, can return in its
entirety in 2003 to defend it.Trophies were presented to both
sets of players by David Steel, the Aire-Wharfe League
President, who thanked the Ilkley club and ground staff for
once again hosting the day in a most excellent manner, to the
umpires for giving up their free time and Allan Chisnell for
sponsoring the match balls for the day. He complemented all
players on their performances and suggested that prospects
looked good for Aire-Wharfe senior cricket if this was the
standard for future. |
|
| Regrettably he also commented that the funds in the Eddie
Nelson Trust which was set up following his death in 1986 have
now dried up and whilst his home club Illingworth have agreed
to sponsor the event in 2003 a new sponsor would be needed in
the future to maintain this most excellent event. Interested
parties should contact the league secretary, Howard Clayton,
via his email address: hc@awscc.fsnet.co.uk |
