GUISELEY 2nd Team VERSUS Adel (Away) - League

26th April 2003

The 2nd XI began the defence of their League title with a tricky away fixture at Adel who have regularly been in the top 3 for the last few years. Nick Fraser lost the toss again and Guiseley were invited to bat on a nightmare lof a track which had not been covered overnight. The groundsman had decided to cover the U11 pitch on the Friday night and not the 2nd XI track for some reason best known to himself!!!!
For the first 20 overs the pitch was unplayable and Guiseley batsmen fell quickly with only Chris Cooper and Ian Colquhoun putting up any resistence in the middle order in support of Sean Yeates who made an excellent and patient 50 runs. However he was out with 9 overs remaining and the score finished at 151 which was realistically 25 short of the sort of target they needed to set.
The Gods were obviously not smiling as it rained persistently and heavily over the tea interval and into the Adel reply. Over 30 minutes play were lost but for some reason, best known to the umpire, only 2 overs were lost when it should have been at least 5.
The Guiseley bowlers performed excellently and particularly Ricky Harrison with an opening burst of 6 overs 1 for 16 when he bowled with pace and accuracy. As usual Adrian Threapleton plugged away manfully but 14 year old Yorkshire off-spinner James Finch was the pick of the bowlers with 16 overs 5 maidens and 3 for 44.
As the night became gloomy Adel's task was made easier as the Guiseley fielders found it impossible to see the ball and despite protestations to the umpire about the light Adel won by 2 wickets at 8:45pm when miners' lamps were the order of the day. The team generally agreed it was a good omen as they lost to Hall Park in the first game of last year and still won the League.
