GUISELEY 1st Team VERSUS RAWDON (Home) - League

11th May 2002

The 2nd XI enjoyed a scintillating victory over close neighbours and rivals Rawdon on Saturday by 56 runs. On a glorious hot and sunny day Rawdon won the toss and invited Guiseley to make first use of a what appeared to be an excellent batting strip.
With both David Ross and Simon Ross away on holiday and injuries to 2 first team players in Glen Taylor and Mark Ross the batting line-up was much changed from the previous week. As such, Steve Dickinson was given a rare opportunity to open the batting on his return to the team having just finished his football season with Southport FC in the Vauxhall Conference.
As usual he batted aggressively scoring 30 in just 36 balls and also breaking Martin Hings' hand when he went for a fiercely struck caught and bowled. The track proved more difficult than the Guiseley players would have thought always providing some assistance for the varied Rawdon attack although 4 LBW decisions in the middle of the innings did not help their cause.
In the end Guiseley were grateful to Adrian Threapleton and Adam Perring for an excellent 7th wicket stand of 58 enabling them to set an eminently gettable target of 149. However the Guiseley attack spear-headed by Marcus Brown and Adrian Threapleton bowled very tightly in the early overs restricting the fast start that Rawdon would have liked.
Early breakthroughs by the pair suddenly made 149 a respectable figure and only David Bell showed any resistance with 25 but once again he proved to be Threapleton's 'rabbit' and his dismissal signaled the end for a strong Rawdon side which was eventually dismissed for 93. Threapleton finished with the excellent figures of 15 - 6 - 41 - 5 to undoubtedly win the 'Gold Award', Marcus Brown had 2 for 23 and Steve Dickinson 2 for 14.
With bowling and fielding performances of this standard the 2nd XI can expect to have an extremely competitive season.
