GUISELEY 1st Team VERSUS BURLEY (AWAY) - League

17th May 2002

An excellent performance in the field gave Guiseley a 2nd consecutive win when they visited Burley an a wet and miserable afternoon. Put into bat after losing the toss Guiseley made a reasonable start on a damp wicket before Mark Ross earned himself the "Guiseley Gavel" by attempting to run three to the best fielder on the park and was run out a yard short of his ground.
Ian Chaplin once again made the 20s only to become the first of Nick Brook's six victims. The proceeding Guiseley batters found runs hard to come by on a bowler friendly pitch and with the by now all too familiar middle order collapse found themselves at 103 for 9. a superb cameo innings from Neil Allitt (34), ably supported by the best number 11 in the league Andy Paley (12no) boosted the Guiseley total to a potential match winning 137 before Neil was dismissed in the last over of the innings.
Encouraged by this late run glut Guiseley took the field in confident mood, knowing some tight bowling and fielding would win them the match. This, however, became less likely as Burley progressed to 51 for 0 due to some indifferent bowling.
The introduction of Paley brought instant results removing Burley opener Simon Tweddle in his 3rd over while at the other end Pete Graham removed dangerman Richard Brook. The rest of the Burley batting line-up capitulated in the face of some tremendous bowling. Pete Graham bowled his next 11 overs for only 3 runs while picking up a couple more wickets before being replaced by Chris Thompson who also chipped in with a wicket at no expense.
Andrew Paley finished his devastating spell with 4 wickets in 4 overs, reducing Burley to 91 all out, losing their last 7 wickets for only 28 runs. Another well earned 6 points, but more runs are still required on a regular basis to mount a serious title challenge.
