GUISELEY 1st Team VERSUS Farsley (AWAY) - FRIENDLY

Guiseley 1st XI made a winning start to the season by beating Bradford league neighbours Farsley by 5 wickets in an exciting pre-season friendly. Played at Red Lane on a dry and dusty wicket it was Farsley, skippered by former Yorkshire play Ashley Metcalfe, who won the toss and batted first. The Farsley openers Ashley Metcalfe and Mark Whitehead made steady progress against some determined bowling from Neil Allitt and new signing Pete Graham reaching 50 after the first 15 overs.
The introduction of young Guiseley spinner Chris Wain changed the game. He took the prize scalp of Metcalfe in his second over, being acrobatically caught by Chris Thompson. Whitehead was then stumped by Guiseley skippper steve Thompson for a creditable half century again off the bowling of Wain. Farsley were steadied by some good batting from Mark Lawson but continued to lose wickets as they reached 151 for 4 with only 5 overs remaining. Ex England and Surrey player Graham Roope who had come to the wicket with the score at 148 mounted a final charge for the Bradford league outfit scoring 32 from 20 balls including one huge 6 which almost finished on the ring road.
This left Guiseley facing a challenging total of 198 to win from their 40 overs. In reply, openers Ian and Craig Chaplin (no relation) made a solid start for Guiseley sharing a 41 partnership before Craig fell to the bowling of Robinson. Glen Taylor contributed a useful 22 and youngster Chris Thompson made 33. At this stage the batting was steady but unspectacular as befitted a pre-season friendly with Guiseley still requiring 77 runs for victory from the last 10 overs.
Skipper Steve Thompson came to the wicket with the score on 113 and shared an initial partnership with son, Chris, of 29 but with the score on 142 and only 6 overs remaining it was hero of the day Sean Yeates who entred the fray to smash an unbeaten 39 from only 26 balls to clinch victory for the Aire-Wharfe side. This was a good, if somewhat un-expected, victory which showed the Guiseley spirit is as strong as ever and puts all the players in the right frame of mind for the season ahead.
