GUISELEY 1st Team VERSUS POOL (Home) - Cup Semi-Final

21st JULY 2002

After the previous day's exploits it was important that Guiseley approached this game in the right frame of mind if they were to reach their fourth successive Waddilove cup final. Playing against division B newcomers Pool was a potential "banana skin" tie as they had already disposed of other top flight clubs on their way to the semis.
Pool won the toss and were happy to bat even though the damp conditions could have been helpful to the bowlers.
Pete Graham, back after injury, opened the attack bowling a miserley spell of 9 overs for 15 runs (how we missed him at Rawdon!!) while Andy Paley took a wicket in his first over. Wickets fell regularly and Pool were struggling at 58 for 4 at the halfway stage.
The dismissal of Richard Henry just after drinks brought Skipper Richard Carlton together with Steve Wood, who put on 53 runs between them before Carlton was caught by Ian Chaplin with the introduction of "golden balls" Mark Ross into the attack. The brilliant run out of McEneany by Howard Reeve with a direct hit from the boundary edge led to the capitulation of the Pool batting who found themselves all out for 119.
Guiseley batted in confident style to reach their target in just 28 overs. Glen Taylor top scored with 41 not out and shared a partnership of 64 with Mark Ross which was the foundation of the Guiseley reply. Chris Thompson hit 16 in 15 balls to seal an emphatic victory. Guiseley now face local rivals Hall Park in the final at Rawdon on the 11th of August.
