GUISELEY 1st Team VERSUS TONG PARK (HOME) - Cup R2

16th JUNE 2002

The Waddilove cup holders will now meet Follifoot in the quarter finals after disposing of Tong Park in this second round clash. As is customary these days in cup ties the team winning the toss usually bats first, and this was no exception,
Guiseley having first knock. Looking for a total of around 180 the home side batted steadily throughout putting together partnerships of around 40 runs for each wicket with with all top 5 batsmen making at least the twenties. Mark Ross went on to make 34 and Glen Taylor top scored with 43.
The final total of 171 for 6 was a little disappointing as the big finish did not materialise, but it proved a winning one all the same. The only threat to the Holders was a 60 run partnership between Australian Ben Johnston (30) and David Groom (34) who took the score to 118 for 4 but after that there was little resistance to the accurate bowling and excellent fielding of the Guiseley side.
The champagne moment of the day came late on in the Tong Park innings when ex-Guiseley player Peter Murden swayed out of the way of what he thought was a bouncer from Chris Thompson, fell flat on his back, and could only watch helpless as the short pitched slower ball removed his off bail, much to the amusement of the Guiseley players and supporters and I suspect his own team mates too.
